DEADLINE: November 15, 2018

The 2019 meeting of the Pacific Division of the American Society of Aesthetics will be the division’s first meeting in a new venue, the Berkeley City Club in Berkeley, CA. (http://berkeleycityclub.com/) In relocating the meeting, we hope to make the Pacific Division meeting more accessible and affordable for participants, while also refocusing the meeting on what has made it great in the past: in-depth, long-form discussion of the best new work in aesthetics and the philosophy of art. The new location is an historic property, designed by Julia Morgan (who also designed Asilomar). It is a few blocks from a BART stop, which we hope will encourage more attendance from those in the Bay area and those flying into Bay area airports

We are pleased to announce the keynote speaker for the 2019 meeting: Professor Elisabeth Camp. Camp is Professor of Philosophy at Rutgers University; she has published on extensively on metaphor, the imagination, and engagement with fiction.

We invite paper submissions as well as panel proposals on any topic in aesthetics, considered broadly. Papers and proposals from traditionally underrepresented groups (including women, racial minorities, and persons with disabilities, among others) are encouraged. We also welcome volunteers to serve as session chairs and commentators. The ASA requires that all persons on the program be members of the ASA and register for the meeting. Submissions from non-members are welcome, but once accepted for the program, participants must establish membership within 30 days or risk replacement on the program. Further instructions on submission are detailed in the call for papers above.

IRENE H. CHAYES TRAVEL FUNDS: The Division has $1000 in Irene H. Chayes Travel Funds for persons on the program (paper or panel presentations) without institutional travel funding. Notify the organizers if you wish to be considered, but do not mention this in your paper.

Policies on Discrimination, Harassment, and Respectful Behavior

The ASA Policies (effective July 23, 2018) will be in effect for this meeting.

Lodging: We are renting meeting rooms only. Participants will be responsible for their own lodging.

  • Group rate at BCC: A very attractive group rate is available for lodging at the BCC of about $150/night, but we must book at least 10 rooms and we must make a final commitment 90 days before the meeting. We have no obligation to BCC to arrange this, but it is a good opportunity for our members attending the meeting. If you are interested, please contact secretary-treasurer@aesthetics-online.org at your earliest opportunity.
  • Local hotels and AirBnB: We will provide information, solely as a courtesy, but will be urging people to seek their own lodging, according to your own finances.

Registration rates: These will be announced as soon as possible, with different rates for professionals and students.
