Abstracts of Panel Sessions (9/5/2018)

Submissions have now closed for the 76th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Aesthetics in Toronto, October 10-13, 2018. The submission deadline was January 15, 2018. If you would like to volunteer to serve as a chair of a session at the meeting, please notify the program chair, Deborah Knight at Deborah.Knight@queensu.ca with a brief statement of your specialty and interests in commenting.

Policies on Discrimination, Harassment, and Respectful Behavior

The ASA Policies (effective July 23, 2018) will be in effect for this meeting.

Luncheon Meetings

  • Feminist Caucus Luncheon: Thursday, October 11: This luncheon has reached its registration limit of 40 and is no longer available.
  • Diversity Committee Luncheon: Friday, October 12: This luncheon has reached its registration limit of 40 and is no longer available
  • Box lunches with salad, rolls, whole fresh fruit, almond squares, crackers & cheese, soft drink and a choice of Honey Ginger Glazed Chicken, Teriyako Glazed Salmon Fillet, vegetarian, or vegan (select your choice when you register)
  • If you have additional dietary restrictions, please register for a vegetarian meal and send an e-mail ASAP to secretary-treasurer@aesthetics-online.org
  • Please register and pay for your luncheon selection when you register for the meeting.
  • Registration is limited to 40 persons for each luncheon, at the request of the committee chairs to facilitate discussion.
  • Cost: $15 regular ($10 students) with the balance subsidized by the ASA.

Travel support

IRENE H. CHAYES TRAVEL FUNDThe winners of the Irene H. Chayes Travel Grants to present their work at the 2018 Annual Meeting in Toronto are Elisa Caldarola, Panos Paris, Nina Penner, Summer Renault-Steele, Sue Spaid, Emine Hande Tuna

Future ASA Annual Meeting will award six travel grants of $1,250 each to support travel to the annual meeting for persons with papers accepted for the program who have no other access to travel funds at their institution(s) during the academic year.

To be eligible for a travel grant from these funds:

*You must be a member of ASA in good standing in the calendar year of the paper presentation and you must register for the meeting.
*Eligible persons include faculty members (including lecturers, adjuncts, and part-timers) and independent scholars.
*If you have some access to travel funds from your institution, but prefer to use it for a different meeting, you are not eligible for a Chayes Travel Grant this year.

To apply for a travel grant next year for the 2019 meeting in Phoenix:

*Submit your paper as you normally would by the announced deadline of January 15, 2019
*Do not include any mention of the Chayes fund in your paper or abstract.
*In the new paper submission system, indicate separately that you wish to be considered for a Chayes travel grant, if your paper is accepted, and explain briefly why you are eligible.
*The program committee will make the final decisions on which persons receive a Chayes travel grant. If more than six persons with accepted papers are eligible, the committee will decide which, based on merit, programmatic, and diversity priorities, should get the award.

For the Irene H. Chayes Travel Grants, "paper" includes both individually submitted papers and panel presentations. 

IRENE H. CHAYES NEW VOICES AWARDS: Commencing in 2018, two awards of $1000 each plus travel of $1250 each to the annual meeting were made. The two winners for 2018 are Emmanuel Ordóñez Angulo, University College, London, and Daniel Wilson, University of Auckland, New Zealand.

For the Irene H. Chayes New Voices Awards, only individually submitted papers are eligible; panel presentations are not. 

STUDENT TRAVEL GRANTS: All full-time students with papers accepted for the program receive a travel grant of $1,250 each to support travel to the annual meeting.

We are pleased to announce that 19 students will receive Student Travel Grants for the 2018 meeting: Daniel Abrahams, Aleksey Balotskiy, Elizabeth Cantalamessa, Kevin Cedeño Pacheco, John Dyck, Jonathan Fine, Patrick Grafton-Cardwell, Ian Heckman, Robbie Kubala, Kathryn Lawson, Irene Martinez Marin, Darla Migan, Tyler Olsson, Jeremy Page, Madeleine Ransom, Matteo Ravasio, Rebecca Wallbank, Weija Wang, Zachary Weinstein

To be eligible for a student travel grant for the 2019 meeting:

*You must be a member of ASA in good standing in the calendar year of the paper presentation and you must register for the meeting.
*You must be a full-time student when you submit the paper and when you present it.
*If you are a full-time student when you submit the paper, complete your degree, and are unemployed in the fall, you will retain the student travel grant for that meeting.

To apply for a student travel grant next year:

*Submit your paper as you normally would by the announced deadline of January 15, 2019
*Do not include any mention of your student status in your paper or abstract.
*In the new paper submission system, indicate separately that you wish to be awarded a student travel grant, if your paper is accepted, and state clearly why you are eligible; documentation may be required by ASA from your department.

For the Student Travel Grants, "paper" includes both individually submitted papers and panel presentations. 

ADDITIONAL TRAVEL SUPPORT: Travel support is provided by ASA for ASA Editors, Program Committee members, and prize winners. If you are eligible, you will be contacted by ASA with reimbursement claim forms. If you have questions about your eligibility, please contact secretary-treasurer@aesthetics-online.org

Outstanding Student Paper: From the papers by full-time students accepted for the meeting, the Program Committee selected one as the outstanding student paper: Elizabeth Cantalamessa (University of Miami), for her paper, “Art By Fiat? Copyright, Ontology, and Metalinguistic Negotiation.” She will receive a prize of $250, in addition to travel support.
