The American Society for Aesthetics is pleased to announce that Dr. Jeanette Bicknell has accepted the offer of the Board of Trustees to serve as the ASA Ombudsperson. This position was established in the ASA’s new Policy on Discrimination, Harassment, and Respectful Behavior, adopted on July 23, 2018. It is expected that her appointment will commence on November 15, 2018.

Dr. Bicknell holds advanced certification in alternative dispute resolution and family mediation from York University and Conrad Grebel College, as well as a PhD in philosophy from York University. A long-time member of the ASA, she has extensive experience as a mediator and consultant in interpersonal organizational conflict in workplace settings, two-party multi-party interventions and conflict coaching.  She also has training and experience investigating complaints of workplace violence, harassment & sexual harassment, and she holds the designation of “Chartered Mediator,” Canada’s most senior designation for dispute resolution professionals.

The ASA now invites nominations, including self-nominations, for persons to serve on a five-person standing committee on Discrimination, Harassment, and Respectful Behavior. Responsibilities will include:

  • Working with the Ombudsperson on review and possible revision of the July 23 policy, taking into account recommendations received by ASA members and the Board of Trustees
  • Serving as Acting Ombudsperson when the Ombudsperson finds it necessary to recuse due to conflicts of interest or is unable for other reasons to attend an ASA meeting
  • Assisting in attendance at ASA Annual Meetings and Divisional meetings to be available for consultation on the ASA policy
  • Assisting in development and implementation of appropriate educational and training activities for members on Discrimination, Harassment, and Respectful Behavior.

It is anticipated that, to the extent possible, one person (either the Ombudsperson or a committee member) will be in attendance at all four ASA meetings commencing in 2019. ASA will reimburse reasonable travel expense for participation in these meetings. The expectation is that committee members will normally serve a three-year term, with the possibility of renewal for one term, although initial appointments will be staggered so as to provide rotation in the membership.

Nominees should submit a cover letter explaining their interest and experience relevant to service on the committee, along with a brief CV, no later than November 15, 2018 to secretary-treasurer@aesthetics-online.org The Ombudsperson and the four ASA officers will conduct preliminary screening and recommendations to the ASA Board of Trustees, which will make the final appointments.
